Freedom Park

Situated at 1900 East Boulevard, Freedom Park is nestled between Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods, in Charlotte, NC – both of which are considered historic districts. It spans almost 98 acres of land, including a 7-acre lake at the heart of the park. This public park is located only a short way from downtown Charlotte.

Something for Everyone

The park was founded right after World War II by the Mecklenburg County Lion’s Club and was donated to the city of Charlotte back in 1949. It was named Freedom Park in honor of war veterans, particularly U.S. Marines.

The park features a number of sports venues, including tennis courts, volleyball courts, and walking trails. There are four baseball fields, 12 tennis courts, four football fields, and five outdoor shelters featuring grills.

The park is operated by Mecklenburg Country Parks and Recreation, and it also plays host to free films and music performances during summers. You might also spot the steam engine the park has on display.

The Festival in the Park

Ever since 1964, Freedom Park has been home to the five-day-long “Festival in the Park,” which deserves a special mention. The festival lures up to 100,000 visitors every year with “good music, good art, and good times.” Local artists show off their work, and a number of food vendors keep the crowds fed and happy.

The park is flanked on the north side by uptown Charlotte and on the south side by Park Road Shopping Center. The Little Sugar Creek Greenway (20 miles of paved walkways) links them both.

Freedom Park is open to the public from Monday through Friday, from sunrise to 9:00 p.m. in the winter and sunrise to 10:30 p.m. during other seasons. It is located some 5 miles from All Seasons Window & Door, which makes for a 13-minute drive.
